Institute of Education, Xiamen University
The Institute of Education (IHE) is a specialized research institute focused on higher education in Xiamen University(XMU), which has long regarded as a key hub for higher education research in China .
Ⅰ. Brief History
Established in 1978, IHE is the birthplace of China’s higher education discipline. The founder, Professor PAN Maoyuan, was a world-renowned Chinese educator, who has laid the foundation of higher education discipline in China. IHE is the host of the Key Research Institute in University “Center for Higher Education Development Research of Xiamen University” named by MOE, China, and a center in higher education discipline. Fujian Province Institute of Higher Education, a key think tank in Fujian Province, is established in 2022. IHE was selected as the First-Class Disciplines construction unit in the Double First Class Construction Plan by MOE in 2021.
Ⅱ. Academic Unit
IHE consists of four academic units, including units for Theory and History of Education, Curriculum Teaching and Educational Psychology, Educational Development and Governance, and Comparative and International Education.
Ⅲ. Faculty and Students
IHE gathers a group of outstanding talents, including 13 professors, 11 associate professors and 10 assistant professors. There are more than 400 graduate students, of which doctoral students account for about two-thirds, and master students about one-third.
Ⅳ. Programme
IHE is committed to cultivating high-level and creative talents with special knowledge in educational theory and management, global vision and educational ideas. At presents, IHE has 5 doctoral programs and 7 master’s programs.
Ⅴ. Research
IHE has achieved foundational academic results in a number of fields in higher education research, e.g. basic theory of higher education, teaching theory, policy and reform of higher education development, higher education system and management, instruction and quality assurance, etc. As a national think tank, IHE undertakes major research projects and provides consultation and research services to governments and higher education institutions.
VI. Academic Exchange and Collaboration
IHE is committed to building a diversity and high-level academic exchange mechanism. It edits academic journals and briefings, and organizes various academic activities, making important contributions to promote the prosperity of higher education research.
IHE actively explores academic exchanges and cooperation both domestically and internationally, and has established close relationships with a number of international organizations and universities around the world.
