
The Doctoral Academic Forum on Higher Education Research, co-sponsored by the Chinese Society of Higher Education and Xiamen University, undertaken by the Institute of Higher Education of Xiamen University, and co-organized by the Higher Education Professional Committee of the Chinese Society of Higher Education, was successfully held at Xiamen University on November 21-22. With the theme of “The Construction of Chinese-Style Modernization and the Reform and Development of Higher Education”, this forum attracted nearly 200 experts and doctoral students from 69 universities to attend on-site.

Guan Peijun (Vice President of the Chinese Society of Higher Education) and Fang Ying (Vice President of Xiamen University) attended the forum and delivered speeches. Qu Zhenyuan (President of the 6th Council of the Chinese Society of Higher Education), Lin Jianhua (former President of Peking University), and Wu Daguang (Vice President of the Chinese Society of Higher Education) respectively gave keynote reports. Zhang Daliang (Vice President of the Chinese Society of Higher Education) announced the list of dissertations included in the 2024 “Academic Innovation Program of the Chinese Society of Higher Education - Library of Doctoral Dissertations in Higher Education”. Yan Guangcai (Member of the Academic Advisory Committee of the Chinese Society of Higher Education), Tang Yuguang (from the Institute of Higher Education of East China Normal University), Yan Guangfen (from the School of Education of Tianjin University), and Bao Wei (from the Institute of Education of Xiamen University) participated in the forum as representatives of supervisors for the included dissertations. The opening ceremony was hosted by Wu Daguang (Vice President of the Chinese Society of Higher Education).
In his speech, Guan Peijun stated that doctoral education, as the highest level of national education, a key link in the independent cultivation of high-end talents and top-notch innovative talents, and a crucial support for the national innovation system, shoulders an important mission. In terms of high-level talent cultivation and innovation, doctoral education in higher education research should not only provide theoretical support for doctoral cultivation but also set a demonstration model of “excellent students, excellent supervisors, and excellent cultivation”. At the national level, promoting the reform and high-quality development of doctoral education is a strategic measure to build a system for the independent cultivation of top-notch innovative talents; at the institutional level (for cultivation institutions), fulfilling the fundamental task of fostering virtue through education and cultivating talents who can shoulder the responsibility of national rejuvenation is the core mission of universities; for supervisors, devoting themselves to academic research, inspiring innovation, setting an example for others, and nurturing talents for the Party and the country is a sacred duty; for doctoral students themselves, closely linking their personal growth and development with the future and destiny of the country, embracing lofty aspirations, adhering to the principle of being both politically reliable and professionally competent, daring to innovate, and making unremitting efforts is the fundamental path to growth and success for young scholars in the new era. He emphasized that further efforts should be made to innovate and enhance the forum, striving to develop the Doctoral Academic Forum into an important academic brand with extensive influence at home and abroad. It should serve as a key platform for doctoral students in the field of higher education research to showcase high-quality research results, a high-level academic venue for doctoral students in relevant fields to conduct academic exchanges and achieve growth, thereby boosting the development of higher education disciplines across the country and promoting the continuous improvement of the quality of doctoral cultivation in the field of higher education.

He emphasized the important role of higher education in the new journey of Chinese-style modernization, noting that the Doctoral Academic Forum on Higher Education Research, as one of the brand academic activities of the Chinese Society of Higher Education, plays a significant role in shaping the academic interests, fostering the academic thinking, and inspiring the academic aspirations of young talents. He stated that Xiamen University will uphold the founding aspiration of Mr. Tan Kah Kee, continue to leverage the advantages of its first-class discipline platforms, develop the forum into an important supporting platform for promoting the development of higher education disciplines across the country, provide Xiamen University’s strength for the development of the higher education discipline and the cultivation of high-level talents in higher education, and offer strong intellectual support for Chinese-style modernization.


This forum featured a series of activities, including plenary reports, reports by doctoral supervisors, reports by doctoral students whose dissertations were included in the library, doctoral student reports, and doctoral thematic salons. Relevant activities were hosted by such figures as Bie Dunrong (Member of the Academic Advisory Committee of the Chinese Society of Higher Education and Dean of the Institute of Education of Xiamen University), Zhao Tingting (Vice Dean of the Institute of Education of Xiamen University), Gao Xiaojie (Director of the Academic and Exchange Department of the Chinese Society of Higher Education), and Wang Shutao (Vice Dean of the Institute of Education of Xiamen University). Han Yanming (former President of Linyi University), Yan Guangcai, Wang Zhehe (Deputy Director in Charge of the Editorial Department of the Chinese Society of Higher Education), Qin Hongxia (Vice Dean of the Institute of Education of Xiamen University), and Bao Shuimei (Vice Dean of the Institute of Higher Education of Lanzhou University) served as interactive comment experts.
In the plenary report session, Qu Zhenyuan, Lin Jianhua, and Wu Daguang delivered reports titled “Accelerating the Building of a Self-Reliant and Outstanding Powerful Country in Higher Education”, “The Logic of Universities”, and “Philosophy: The ‘Method’ That Transcends Research Method” respectively. In the doctoral supervisor report session, Liu Zhentian (Director of the Higher Education Development Research Center of Xiamen University and Secretary of the Party Committee of the Institute of Education), Huang Futao (Deputy Director of the Higher Education Research and Development Center of Hiroshima University in Japan), Tang Yuguang, and Yan Guangfen shared their academic research experience with doctoral students based on their own research journeys and specialized research topics, providing guidance for the development of doctoral students’ research careers. In the report session by doctoral students with included dissertations, 4 representative doctoral students whose dissertations were included in the library presented their research results. In the doctoral student report session, 30 doctoral students exchanged their learning experiences. In the doctoral thematic salon session, 4 representative doctoral students with included dissertations shared insights and engaged in interactions around the theme of “How to Develop an Excellent Doctoral Dissertation”.
The “Doctoral Academic Forum on Higher Education Research” is a brand academic activity of the Chinese Society of Higher Education, with extensive influence. Approved by the Ministry of Education, the forum is co-sponsored by the Chinese Society of Higher Education and Xiamen University and held annually. It aims to thoroughly implement the spirits of the Third Plenary Session of the 20th CPC Central Committee and the National Education Conference, build a high-level platform for academic exchange and achievement demonstration, and promote the development of higher education disciplines and the improvement of talent cultivation quality. This year’s forum featured distinct and focused themes, richly designed sessions, and extensive interdisciplinary exchanges.
