Can Co-supervision Improve Doctoral Supervision Outcomes? An Analysis Based on National Doctoral Graduate Survey Data
LI Chengfeng,CHEN Hongjie,SHEN Wenqin
Abstract:This study uses the "National Doctoral Graduates Survey Data" to examine whether the co-supervision outcomes is significantly better than one-on-one supervision. OLS and Logit regression analysis finds that co-supervision significantly enhances doctoral students' research capabilities and reduces the likelihood of delayed graduation compared to one-on-one supervision. Furthermore, there was a moderating effect of discipline on the aforementioned relationship. Specifically, the relationship was strengthened in the natural sciences, whereas they became statistically insignificant in the humanities and social sciences. To enhance doctoral supervision outcomes, it is recommended to actively promote co-supervision while ensuring it does not become merely a formality. In promoting co-supervision, the natural sciences and the humanities and social sciences should identify their respective focus areas.
